Many Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) such as cretinism are permanent and incurable once a child is born with severe brain damage, but they are preventable. Certain goitres can be “cured” or ‘reversed’ in the early stages. Regular intake of iodine through salt, however, prevents goitre and all other manifestations of iodine deficiency. Similarly, regular intake of iron through salt is reported to reduce the prevalence of anaemia and prevent iron-deficiency anaemia.
