The daily requirement of iodine for an adult is 150 micrograms per day. Pregnant women and lactating mothers however, need more iodine (250 micrograms per day). The total iodine requirement for a person living up to 70 years of life would add up to less than a teaspoonful. However, as there is no storage organ for iodine in the body, it is necessary for iodine to be included in our diet daily. On average, a person consumes between 8-12 g of salt per day. Iodine is added to salt at the level of 15 parts per million at the consumer level. Therefore, 100% of our daily requirement of iodine (RDA-Recommended Dietary Allowance) is met through iodised salt or double fortified salt. DFS is designed to provide 30%-60% for iron as iron can be obtained through other food sources.
