FSSAI lays down science-based standards for articles of food and regulates their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food to 130 crore citizens of the country. The authority is also responsible for creating an information network across the country so that the public, consumers, etc receive rapid, reliable and accurate information about food safety and hygiene and related issues of concern.
Safe & Nutritious Food (SNF) - A Way of Life
A bouquet of initiatives for citizens guidance and behavioural change. The authority has launched a series of SNF initiatives including @Home, @School, @Workplace and @When Eating Out with a 360-degree approach to food safety and healthy nutrition to prevent food borne infections and diseases and for complete nutrition for citizens everywhere.
The authority offers a fair opportunity to relevant stakeholders to participate in various draft notifications issued time to time. The objections or suggestions, if any, are required to be reviewed and addressed to the authority for effective consideration.
Notices for comment
The authority provides a notice calling for suggestions, views, comments etc from various stakeholders within a period of 60 days on the draft Food Safety and Standards Regulations before any Gazetted notifications.
Food Safety Display Board
There is a mandatory requirement of displaying FSSAI License Number at food premises. The FSDB will replace the current requirement in the Food Safety and Standards regulations which necessitate food businesses to display FSSAI Registration / license. FSDBs will not only make the registration/license number visible but will also inform the customer and the food handler about the important food safety and hygiene practices required to keep food safe. It will also provide details of various feedback options available to reach FSSAI.
Safe Water for Healthy Living
The purpose behind this unique project, lies in assuring clean packaged drinking water (free of harmful toxins and microbes) to 130 crore people across the country. The consumers have the right to know that the packaged drinking bottled water or mineral water they purchase is safe to consume and the portal helps in assuring the safety of water that adheres to strict quality assurance, through proper testing measures.
Food Safety Voice
The Authority now has a comprehensive system of citizen’s concern management and a reliable 360 degree mechanism to deal with the consumer complaint redressal through various focal points including social media, emails, direct helpline, FSSAI mobile App and a dedicated concerned management website
To upgrade Food Testing Laboratories in India, the authority has announced a major scheme for strengthening of Food Testing Infrastructure in the country at an estimated cost of Rs. 482-crore, in the light of the recent observations by Hon’ble High Court, Mumbai. The scheme focuses on all aspects of food testing system including strengthening of state food labs and referral labs, capacity building of food analysts and other technical personnel engaged in the analysis of food (both within and outside the Government) and creation of mobile food labs across all States/UTs.
Milk Quality Monitoring System
A National Milk Quality Survey is being carried out across India covering all the States and Union territories in the country for assessing the quality of milk available to the consumers with focus on unsafe/adulterated milk. The milk samples are being tested for the Fat and SNF content and presence of 14 most common adulterants under a common SOP. More than 130 cities will be covered across 35 States/UTstaking approx.1700 samples. The survey is being carried out under the guidance of a State Level Steering Committee.
FSSAI brings an easy solution of Training & Certification through its new initiative, that is FoSTaC. FoSTaC offers nine different types of courses meant for different types of food businesses on different competency level. FSSAI guides every food business operator to have at least one trained and certified person in their business premises to ensure food safety.
All training plans and awareness materials integrated together in one online portal. This is your one-stop access to training manuals, resource persons, and training forms. One can also browse through the status of different training and presentations conducted by FSSAI.

Import Clearance Procedure
The central government shall, while prohibiting, restricting or otherwise regulating import of articles of food under the Foreign Trade Act, 1992 follow the standards laid down by the Food Authority under the provisions of this Act.
Corporates for Safe and Nutritious Food
C4SnF aims at making a collaborative effort with food businesses to ensure food safety and nutrition. The program seeks Corporates engagement to further stimulate the directive of ensuring safe and wholesome food to citizens of the country with belief in the ideology that “Food Safety is a Shared Responsibility”. Memorandum of Understanding
In line with the FSS Act, the Food Authority is required to provide scientific and technical assistance to the Central Government and the State Governments for improving co-operation with international organizations. The Food Authority shall also promote co-ordination of work on food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations and promote consistency between international technical standards and domestic food standards through signing relevant MOUs
