Foodborne diseases are an important cause of morbidity and mortality, and a significant impediment to socio- conomic development worldwide, but the full extent and burden of unsafe food, and especially the burden arising fromchemical and parasitic contaminants, hasbeen unknown. Precise information onthe burden of foodborne diseases canadequately inform policy-makers and toallocate appropriate resources for foodsafety control and intervention efforts.
